An instrument for the future.

In March 2010 we became the first FSC certified maker of woodwind instruments in the world.    We buy our wood responsibly to help safeguard the hugely valuable natural resources of the tropical forests which provide the material needed to make clarinets.

We hope that our commitment will help to persuade other makers

to join in protecting endangered species and in turn work to protect

the future for the forests, wildlife, communities and of course music.

What makes a Hanson T series clarinet so special?  Read on....

The top 5% selected Grenadilla wood is naturally aged for up to 12 years before being CNC sculptured to make our top line clarinets.

The internal and external surface finish of the wood is stunningly beautiful - whether you choose traditional blackwood

or a more contemporary rosewood instrument you are sure to feel inspired every time you open the case.

These very special creations are literally carved from a single piece of wood.  Hand selected from the

best of the best to become a Hanson T series clarinet.    Our purpose built computer controlled

machining centre dedicated to the top line instruments cuts the wood with an accuracy that

is difficult to imagine; up to 7 microns (0.007mm) - a tenth of the width of a human hair.

In a single process the body of the instrument comes alive as the cutters

rotate at up to 60,000rpm; 6,000 time each second to simply glide

through the wood without stress or strain to the surface.

Innovation and excellence in our manufacture is clear in both the

appearance and performance of the finished instrument.

Focused and responsive with a choice of tone colours to suit your playing style.

Hanson T series clarinets are available in a choice of bore sizes, tapers and tone combinations to suit your taste.

Traditional bore configurations - instantly familiar to all.

  1. English bore.   Large bore clarinet with a huge tonal palate and big character.   Favoured by Jazz and Symphonic players alike, this clarinet is big on sound and is rewarding to play.

  1. French bore.   Medium large bore clarinet with a more subtle tone.  Well suited for orchestral players demanding a smooth sound and accurate intonation.

Hanson bore configurations - free blowing and distinctive.

  1. Jazz cut.  Dual bore instrument which delivers a brilliant sound.  Make a statement with this instrument and don’t be shy. You will get noticed for all the right reasons!

  1. Symphony.  Dual bore with a parabolic taper which delivers a full and dark timbre.  Particularly free blowing, this clarinet will suit players whom favour a more robust tone whilst retaining a rich and creamy sound.

All models are available in Grenadilla, Ebonite, Rosewood or Reinforced Grenadilla.  Tone woods are aged up to 12 years depending on the model you select before final finishing and the beginning of a new musical life.   Every instrument is individual and distinctive with wonderful graining and natural colouring of the wood making each piece a delight to behold.  Our traditional seasoning process plays a significant role for the appearance and durability of the wood and you will notice immediately the difference in a Hanson clarinet even before a note is played.

Keywork on T series instruments is mirror polished and finished with pure silver, palladium or 24 karat gold.  The innovative design of keywork linkages help ensure that proper adjustment is maintained, making difficult passages and moving over ‘the break‘ less arduous.

Final play testing and inspection of every clarinet is done by Alastair Hanson.  An instrument that bears his family name carries his reputation.  No instrument leaves the building until it is deemed a worthy ambassador.

Our investment in technology, fine materials and old fashioned craftsmanship combine to create an instrument you will be proud to own and play.
